Best Interview Questions to Ask an Employer
One of the most important parts of an interview is when the employer asks the candidate if they have any questions for them. Asking questions not only shows your interest in the position and company as your future employer, but it also helps you ultimately decide if it’s a good fit for you. The type of role depends on the level of questions you ask, but in general there are several questions you should consider asking to help you make that right decision.
Can you describe the company culture?
This type of question will provide you with a clearer idea of who your future managers and co-workers are and whether your personality and values will line up. If you thrive in a collaborative and team oriented environment, you may not align with a company where employees work independently and are very competitive.
What would make someone successful in this role?
This question provides an idea of how you will need to perform to be successful in this position. If the position requires a self-motivated, analytical, and organized individual, you need to make sure you have those same qualities, or it won’t be a good fit.
Why is the position open?
The background of the position you are applying for gives great insight into what you’re walking into. There are several reasons a position could be open: it’s a brand new role, the prior employee retired, or after a few years in that role, it was time for a new change. A red flag to be on the lookout for is if the company shares they’ve struggled to keep this role filled. That could be a sign of poor communication about expectations of the job, poor management, or poor work environment.
Why do you enjoy working here?
This is another way to learn more about the company culture, how the managers treat their employees, how supportive your future co-workers might be, perks that may not have been mentioned on the job description, etc.
What would you say is the most challenging aspect of this role?
There can be several different challenges to a role. It’s good to know the difficulties of a job ahead of time to help you determine if you have the skills to handle them or not.
How does your company work to engage and retain top talent?
One of the biggest indicators of a healthy and growing company is one that has a strategy for engagement and retention. A company that can’t attract new talent or hold on to existing talent will not prosper in an ever-growing and changing economy.
What are some of the biggest challenges your company has faced over the last few years?
This is a great way to see the types of difficulties that arise in that industry or field and how the company dealt with them. The past is a very good indicator for the future.
How quickly are you looking to fill this role?
The timeline for the position gives you a better understanding of when you can expect to hear back from the interviewer and how fast you would need to move to take the role.
What is the growth potential like here?
This is a tricky question to ask. You don’t want to give off that you are expecting to grow within the next 6 months, but you also want to know if you will have the ability to be promoted within the company. If there isn’t growth potential, it may not be the right fit for you.
Is there anything that concerns you about hiring me?
This is a very bold question so you need to be prepared for a bold answer. Some interviews may just say no, but if they share any concerns, be ready to build their confidence in you. If they’re concerned about example A, share specific times you handled example A successfully in a previous job. Leave no room for doubt!
